Toshiba releases highest-density hard drivenews
05 June 2006
Toshiba Corp. has released a 2.5-in., double-platter hard disk drive, which features the highest density available yet from any such component, it said.

The 2.5 in. disk uses perpendicular magnetic recording technology to hold 178.8Gbit of data per square inch. This density surpasses the current record, also held by Toshiba, of 133Gbit per square inch. The drive itself is designed to hold 200GB.

The company said it will start mass production of the disks in August.

According to market observers, the new technology, very likely, will play a role in Toshiba's planned digital audio player, which is to be developed in conjunction with Microsoft Corp. and Japan's NTT DoCoMo for the Japanese market.
