Hitachi develops smallest IC chip news
06 February 2006
The Japanese electronics major Hitachi today disclosed that it had developed the world's tiniest integrated circuit (IC) chip that can be embedded in paper to track down parcels or prove the authenticity of a document, and embedded on securities and certificates to prevent forgeries and duplication.

According to Hitachi the chip is as minute as a speck of dust, measuring 0.15 millimeters by 0.15 millimeters and 7.5 micrometers (one thousandth of a millimeter) thick.

The chip receives power from electrical waves through an external antenna.

The small size dramatically boosts the number of chips that can be made from a single wafer making them less expensive. The chip can be used in parcel wrappings to enable such consignments to be tracked online till their delivery.
