Bangalore: UK-based Tesco, among the top three retailers in the world, operating 2,300 stores in 13 countries and staff around 330,000, has launched its Hindustan Service Centre in Bangalore.

The service centre will support the Tesco group by delivering IT and IT-enabled business processes to the group's global operations. It will act as a centre of excellence for the business, supporting existing technologies and the introducing new retail-focussed ones and applications like Retek. The state of the art campus in Whitefield is Tesco's first shared service centre outside the UK, and is equipped with a gym, a cafeteria with open-air seating, an Internet cafĂ©, a shop and an amphitheatre.

Tesco has been a major investor in India. Its non-food sourcing office, now based at the Bangalore centre, buys more than $70m worth of products from the Indian sub-continent each year. Tesco sells around one million pairs of shorts bought from Bangalore, and over four million vests and t-shirts sold in Tesco stores across the world come from Tirupur in Tamil Nadu.

Congratulating Tesco on the launch of the Bangalore centre, the chief minister of Karnataka, Dharam Singh added, "The fact that an international retailer like Tesco has chosen to base its new shared service centre in Bangalore is a great reflection on the skills and talents which Karnataka has to offer. The investment in this impressive new campus makes it clear they are here to stay and I wish them every success."

Launching the new centre, Philip Clarke, IT director, Tesco International, said, "The variety and availability of high-technology skills in Bangalore made the city the obvious choice for the new centre. Our ability to innovate and pioneer new technology has helped Tesco to grow into one of the world's leading retailers. This new centre will play a key role in the future development of the business. HSC is a Tesco operation, run by Tesco people living the 'Tesco values' - treat people how we like to be treated and no one tries harder for customers."

The local management team is led by Meena Ganesh, known for her ability to build teams. Says Ganesh, "Being part of such a people-focussed company is a great help in building a new team - we are already attracting some of the best talent in the industry and plan to increase our headcount to 770 by the end of 2005."
