Monday: Birlasoft Ltd, the IT arm of the CK Birla Group, has announced the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art software development centre in Noida (national capital region). The new centre, inaugurated by Kiran Karnik, president, NASSCOM, is the largest in the company's global development centre network.

With an investment of US$5 million, the facility, with a capacity of 700 professionals, will cater to industries like banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), PeopleSoft practices and a number of dedicated technologies network for various customers.

Birlasoft has major expansion plans. The new facility is, in fact, the second one to come up in two successive years, with the earlier centre housing over 600 IT professionals being loaunched in Chennai in August 2003. The Chennai centre also acts as a disaster recovery and business continuity site for the Noida center.

According to Kamal Mansharamani, CEO, Birlasoft, "The expansion plans stem from our commitment to build Birlasoft into a major player in the IT services and solutions space. Our new center in Noida will enable us to strengthen our position in the market. We are actively looking at further expanding our base in the national capital region and Chennai to meet our growing business needs. With the launch of the new center, our employee strength would go up to 3,500."

With export earnings of Rs427 crores in 2003-04, Birlasoft has been ranked 14th in the NASSCOM top IT software and services exporters from India. It has increased its year-on-year revenues from software and services exports by 29 per cent.

Birlasoft, a global software solutions and services company, is part of the US $1.0-billion GP-CK Birla Group with an equity investment by G E Capital. It has a global footprint with multiple sales and marketing offices in the US, Europe, Australia and Singapore, with a development centre in Melbourne.
