New Delhi: National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) strongly condemns the mental harassment inflicted on some Indian IT professionals and other Indians in Malaysia on 9 March 2003.

The much sought-after Indian IT professionals are working in Malaysia either with Malaysian companies or Indian companies who have set up base there. Nasscom () takes a very serious view of this incident and is currently in the process of collating details of the entire episode and the reason behind it, including the names of the companies whose officials have faced this harassment.

This is an unfortunate act, which maligns the dignity of the individuals and the industry, and we are in touch with key authorities to ensure the safety of Indian IT professionals. We are closely in touch with our partners in Malaysia, MDC (Multimedia Development Corporation, SDN) with whom we have a memorandum of understanding, to verify the details. We are also in touch with the ministry of external affairs, India, to ensure there is an early resolution to the issue and Indian IT professionals can resume their work.

India has traditionally had excellent relations with Malaysia, and many Indian IT companies are looking at that country as a location for their activities. We hope that this unfortunate incident is an aberration, which the Malaysian authorities will quickly remedy. We expect them to ensure corrective action against any overzealous police officials, so that the Indian IT industry can continue to work favourably in Malaysia as an attractive investment and work destination.
