Pune: Abee Info-Consumables Ltd has launched a printer refill service whereby customers can get their printer cartridges refilled at their doorstep by dialing a number.

A company press release said the service will be operational in Pune for the first six months but Abee has plans to extend this service all over India in due course of time.

Once the cartridge is over, the customer just dials a number and the 'Abee Mobile Van' comes to his doorstep offering the refill at Rs 250. This service gives users savings of as much as 80 per cent compared to OEM cartridges.

B B Somani, managing director, said: "Unfortunately, local refillers have given a bad name to the concept of refilling. We introduced quality refill for the Dot Matrix inkjet in the mid 90's. We are confident that EasyFill will change the perception of the value that the IT consumables segment brings and its contribution to the Indian economy."

There are 14.48 lakh usable inkjet printers in the market today and the market is growing. At current numbers, at an average use of 1 cartridge per printer in a month, the total spend annually on an OEM cartridge would be Rs 2,085 crore. As nearly all OEM cartridges are imported, more than 98 per cent of this amount goes out of the country in foreign exchange. Thus this concept can potentially save Rs 1,700 crore for the country.

Tests have shown that with Abee EasyFill users can get up to 30 per cent more printouts using the same quantity of ink as compared to the OEM cartridge.
