Consumers, especially in smaller cities and towns, used more data on 3G networks in 2015 for watching videos as also for social networks for the first time surpassing 2G networks, the annual study by Nokia Networks' MBit Index revealed.

According to information as per the Nokia MBiT Index for 2015 data traffic on 3G communications networks shot up 85 per cent from 2014, and surpassed the  750 megabits per user benchmark in the past year, aided by expansion of 3G data networks by operators, as also the falling prices of 3G smartphones.

The usage also surpassed the amount of data consumed on 2G networks for the first time in 2014, according to the study. Sandeep Girotra, vice president and head of India market at Nokia said in a statement, ''Aggresive 3G network expansion in existing circles and new launches by operators have been instrumental in increasing data traffic in India.''

''Moreover, the rapid evolution of the device ecosystem supported by a decline in prices, presents a significant growth opportunities for operators as they launch and expand 4G LTE networks in coming years.''

While overall internet usage on mobile phones surged 50 per cent in 2015, lower than the 74 per cent growth in 2014, data usage on 3G networks was up to 64 per cent from 52 per cent a year earlier, the study showed.

The report further added that users' appetite for multimedia content and social networking platforms had led to increase in data consumption on smart devices. The study found that the average monthly 3G data usage had shot past the 750MB mark per subscriber.

The 4G-LTE network service, which had started  to go live in select Indian cities, was expected to further drive the amount of data consumption in the coming years.

Key findings of the Nokia MBiT Index study:

  • 3G traffic grew 85 per cent year-on-year following 3G expansion and device availability.
  • 3G data usage per user clocked over 750 MB, outpacing 2G traffic for first time across all circles.
  • 4G LTE device ecosystem registered eight-fold growth in 2015, setting stage for further data traffic growth in 2016.
