Proposed ultra mega power projects

The bidding process of the ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) at Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand) has been initiated, the commencement of bidding for the remaining five locations would take place after the requisite clearances from the state governments has been obtained, said union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde in the Rajya Sabha, yesterday.

The contracts for the UMPPs in Mundra and Sasan had been given to Tata Power Ltd. and Reliance Power Ltd respectively.

Shinde also told the House that the ministry of power had asked the concerned state governments to provide the requisite clearances and examine the feasibility of alternate sites for the development of the ultra mega power projects in their respective states.

The ministry of power had launched an initiative to develop coal-based UMPPs, each of about 4000 MW capacity, on a Build, Own and Operate basis, and the project developer had been selected through a tariff-based competitive bidding process.

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in consultation with the states, had identified the nine locations for UMPPs at:
(i) Sasan in Madhya Pradesh
(ii) Mundra in Gujarat
(iii) Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh
(iv) Akaltara in Chhattisgarh
(v) Tadri in Karnataka
(vi) Girye in Maharashtra
(vii) Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu
(viii) Sundergarh District in Orissa; and
(ix) Tilaiya in Jharkhand.

Power project in Uttarakhand
Maneri Bhali Stage-II HE Project of capacity (4x76 MW = 304 MW) will be commissioned during the year 2007-08 in Uttarakhand, said power minister Sushilkumar Shinde.
