New Delhi: India has eased visa norms for US nationals, doing away with the requirement for producing birth certificates along with their applications. Government of India sources said the ministry of external affairs (MEA) had issued a relevant direction to its missions in the US.

With 827,140 US tourists visiting the country in 2009, USA has become the main source of tourists for India.

Service providers in travel trade had been asking authorities to do away with this requirement for quite some time as it had a negative impact on the sector.

The matter was taken up by the tourism ministry with the MEA which has acceded to the request.
