Forex earnings from tourists rise 28 per cent to over $1 billion in June

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism rose 28.1 per cent year-on-year to $1.02 billion in June 2010 against $796 million each during June 2009 and June 2008.

Foreign exchange earnings during the period January-June 2010 rose 36.6 per cent to $6.84 billion against $5.01 billion in January-June 2009, which represented a negative growth of 21.6 per cent over the corresponding period of 2008.

In rupee terms, earnings from tourism during June 2010 stood at Rs4,751 crore against Rs3,801 crore in June 2009 and Rs3,409 crore in June 2008.  

This represents a 25 per cent year-on-year growth in June 2010 over June 2009 and an 11.5 per cent growth in June 2009 over June 2008.

Earnings from tourism during the period January-June 2010 rose 27.1 per cent to Rs31,373 crore from Rs24,693 crore during January-June 2009, which registered a negative growth of 4.4 per cent over the corresponding period of 2008.

Foreign tourist arrivals in India rose 8 per cent year-on-year to 3.70 lakh in June 2010 compared with 3.42 lakh during June 2009 and 3.42 lakh in June 2008.
