India’s first cargo village set to begin operations at Bengaluru airport

New Delhi: The first of its kind cargo village is all set to begin operations at Bengaluru International airport. 

Cargo development is a key focus of BIAL's core business strategy and this facility will generate employment opportunities and create a better working environment for its occupants,'' said Albert Brunner, CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited.  

Built by airport operator Bangalore International Airport Ltd, the cargo village was set up at an investment of Rs12 crore, ($2.4 million) and took 10 months to build.

Spread over 11 acres, the village will have 120 freight forwarders and 80 custom house agents and will start operations from 1 January 2009.

The cargo village will ensure faster clearances of import and export consignments from the cargo terminals at the airport.NNNNTo be managed by cargo associations, the cargo village will offer all essential facilities such as banks, conference rooms, training rooms, business centre, help desk, staff canteen, truck parking, etc. will of which combine to make it a truly advanced facility. It will also accommodate parking of nearly 80 trucks.

The cargo space has come up close to the two terminals run by the two cargo concessionaires,  Menzies Aviation Bobba Pvt Ltd and Air India-SATS.

BIAL hopes to make the airport the cargo hub of the South. The Cargo Village will ensure faster clearances of import and export consignments from the cargo terminals and strengthen Bangalore's position as a trade and commercial hub.
