The Indian auto industry has maintained a steady growth in the April - June quarter, though sales in some segments dropped compared to the January to March 2008 figures. According to the Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM), the growth in the passenger vehicles segment from April to July 2008 was 10.97 per cent, which is lower than the first quarter growth of 15.08 per cent. Passenger car sales grew by 8.91 per cent, utility vehicles by 16.03 per cent and multi purpose vehicles by 24.62 per cent in this period. The overall commercial vehicles also grew by 8.00 per cent, which is lower than the first quarter growth of 9.59 per cent. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles grew at 5.45 per cent and light commercial vehicles recorded a growth of 11.13 per cent. Three-wheelers sales also improved in April – July 2008 over the first quarter growth by 3.28 per cent. Passenger carriers sales were up by 18.62 per cent during the same period while goods carries declined by 21.71 per cent. Two-wheelers registered higher growth of 9.91 per cent during this period than the first quarter growth of 7.15 per cent. Motorcycles and scooters sales increased by 10.95 per cent and 7.03 per cent respectively. Sales of mopeds also grew by 3.38 per cent. Electric two wheelers segment recorded 20.50 per cent growth. Auto exports grew by 23.92 per cent, but not all segments registered positive growth in the April to July period. Passenger vehicles export grew by 42.66 percent, while two-wheelers segment grew by 27.04 per. However, exports of commercial vehicles segment declined by 4.12 per cent..
