The downturn and negative sentiments in the market proved to be no hurdles for German carmaker Volkswagen as it raced to close the year clocking 140 per cent growth, selling 78,408 units in the calendar year 2011 as against 32,627 units sold in the same period last year. Its Passat, which incorporates `BlueMotion Technologies' as also the Jetta showed robust growth since their launch with the Passat selling 1,170 units since April and the Jetta selling 1,688 units post launch in August.
Additionally, the Polo and the Vento, which for the first time, got one full year of sales after their market introduction along with their action model variants turned in excellent performance selling 74,305 units for the period January-December 2011.
Commenting on the excellent sales performance, Neeraj Garg, member of board of directors, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt Ltd, said despite the ups and downs over the last six months the company had continued to invest in the market by way of introducing new products, expanding its reach and refreshing its existing models by way of its action model strategy in the country.
He said it gave the company immense pleasure to see such excellent results and also the confidence that the brand was on the right track.
