In the run-up to the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo beginning 7 January, Maruti Suzuki has unveiled a teaser of an all-new compact SUV concept. It is believed the new car is positioned to replace the Gypsy in Indian markets and Jimny abroad.
The company has already put a few cropped images of the concept car on its website to entice the target audience. It looks inspired by the iconic Gypsy and is expected to compete with the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, both of which will be on display at the expo.
The Gypsy and the Jimny haven't received any major upgrades in long time and lack many modern features.
Meanwhile, other manufacturers are elbowing into the space – apart from Renault and Ford, Hyundai too will also display a small SUV.
The Gypsy has occupied a unique niche in the Indian market for many years. Being reputedly rugged and reliable, it gets the bulk of its sales numbers from the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. With modern features and more comforts, a new compact Suzuki SUV on the same lines can be expected to do well in the Indian market.
