Introduction
Maruti Udyog Ltd was incorporated in 1981 under the provisions of the Indian Companies Act, 1956. In 1983, a license and joint venture agreement was signed between Maruti and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) of Japan. The same year, Maruti 800, a 796 cc hatchback, India s first affordable car, rolled out. In 1986, Maruti produced 100,000 vehicles (cumulative production). In 1990, it introduced the Maruti 1000 (970cc, 3 box), India s first contemporary sedan. SMC increased its stake in Maruti to 50 per cent in 1992. In 1997, Maruti produced the two millionth vehicle since the commencement of production. In 2000, it became the first car company in India to launch a call centre. The fiftieth lakh Maruti car rolled out in April, 2005.
