Even as Baba Ramdev broke his fast against corruption after going for nine days without food, another swami was breathing his last after being on a hunger strike for 115 days.

Nigamanand, 34, breathed his last after being on a hunger strike for 115 days.

Swami Nigamanand, seer at the Matri Sadan Ashram, undertook a fast unto death to protest illegal mining on the banks of the river Ganga in Haridwar and force the state government to issue orders to immediately stop the quarrying around the Ganga.

He started his fast on 19 February in Haridwar, and on 30 April he had to be shifted by the district administration to the Haridwar District Hospital as his condition started deteriorating.

However, he refused to touch food and on 2 May slipped into coma and was shifted to Dehradun's Himalayan Hospital and put on life support.

Nigamanand finally breathed his last yesterday - almost four months after he gave up food.
