With opportunities to open up in the green sector top engineering institutes and business schools across India are introducing green courses to train students in the field.

Business schools, quick to respond to the green trend are offering management lessons in environment-related disciplines.

While the Birla Institute of Management Technology (Bimtech) and the Institute of Chemical Technology have recently come out with full fledged MBA courses in sustainability related disciplines, IIM- Calcutta in association with IIT-Madras has started offering course in green manufacturing from this year.

IIM- Ahmedabad and IIM-Lucknow have also been incorporating carbon courses in various programmes over the last few years.

According to Shekhar Chaudhari, director, IIM-Calcutta, it is now becoming imperative for managers to have a background in the sustainability discipline to effectively lead corporates and other entities on the issue.

The green manufacturing course now being offered under the post-graduate programme for executives for visionary leadership in manufacturing - jointly by IIM-Calcutta, IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Madras is focused on both technological and management aspects of greening. It is an initiative of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, and is supported by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) under a bilateral agreement between the two governments.

The Birla Institute of Management Technology or BimTech has introduced a full fledge two-year, full-time post-graduate diploma in management (Sustainable Development Practices) from this year. Bimtech director H Chaturvedi said the programme aims to impart skills to managers to tap new opportunites arising from the changing international policies and national priorities on development issues and business responses to them.

The programme has been modeled along lines of similar courses at leading foreign institutions like the Earth Institute at Columbia University and have been adapted to the Indian context factoring in views of thought leaders from industry, according to programme coordinator Rahul Singh.
