Serial blasts rock Bangalore; 1 killed, over 15 injured news
25 July 2008

Mumbai: Seven low-intensity bombs exploded across India's silicon valley  Bangalore on Friday afternoon killing one woman and injuring over 15 people, police said.

The first blast took place near Madiwala checkpost, at around 1:30 pm. Crude bombs, stuffed with nuts and bolts, also exploded at Adugodi, Nayandahalli, Pantharapalya and Vittal Mallya Road - all within 15 minutes of each other.

The Madiwala blast killed a woman who was waiting at a bus stop on the Bangalore-Hosur Road while her husband and another person were seriously injured.

All the injured have been taken to Mallya Hospital near Rajaram Mohan Rai circle.

''In all these cases they have created the blast using timer devices," Bangalore police commissioner Shankar Bidari said at the site of one of the blasts. ''Explosives have also been used, in quantity equal to one or two grenades," he added.

Police said they also recovered gelatin sticks, mainly used in quarry operations, from one of the blast sites. They said the attack bore some hallmarks of the Bangladeshi militant group Harkat-ul-Jihad al Islami (HuJI).

Bomb disposal squads and forensic experts have been rushed to the blast sites and telephone network have been jammed to stop the spread of rumours.

''We are monitoring the situation and request all residents to continue with their normal routine. The bomb squad and explosives experts are on the spot. We will deal with the situation," Bidari said.

Bangalore hosts most of India's IT and outsourcing business and is home to over 1,500 top firms, including global majors like Microsoft Corp, Intel Corp and IBM.

The city was subject to terrorist attack in December 2005 when some unidentified extremists opened fire at the Indian Institute of Science complex killing Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi professor MC Puri.
