Industrial production growth dips to 5.3 per cent in January news

Mumbai: Industrial production growth in the country declined to 5.3 per cent in January this year, against 11.6 per cent in January 2007. Growth in all major sectors, including manufacturing, electricity and mining, declined, official data showed.

As per quick estimates released by the Central Statistical Organisation, the index of industrial production (base 1993-94) stood at 279.7 in January this year, 5.3 per cent higher from the level in January 2007.

The cumulative growth in industrial production for the period April-January 2007-08 stood at 8.7 per cent, against 11.2 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

In January, all major sectors like manufacturing, mining and electricity registered a slide in production growth.

Consumer durables production registered a negative growth both in January and the first 10 months of this fiscal.

Output of consumer durables fell to 3.1 per cent in January this year, against a 5.3 per cent growth in the same month last year. In April-January 2007-08 production declined to 1.7 per cent, against 10.6 per cent growth in the same period last fiscal.

Growth in manufacturing output slipped to 5.9 per cent in January this year, against 12.3 per cent in January 2007. Growth in electricity generation fell to 3.3 per cent from 8.3 per cent and mining output growth moderated to 1.8 per cent from 7.7 per cent.

During April-January 2007-08, manufacturing output growth declined to 9.2 per cent from 12.1 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Electricity generation growth slowed down to 6.3 per cent, as against 7.6 per cent in the same period last fiscal while mining output growth during the 10 months declined to 4.6 per cent from 4.8 per cent.

In terms of industries, as many as fifteen out of the seventeen industry groups have shown positive growth during January 2008 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'jute and other vegetable fibre textile (except cotton)' has shown the highest growth of 281.1 per cent, followed by 18.7 per cent in 'leather and fur products' and 13.1 per cent in 'basic chemicals and chemical products (except production of petroleum and coal)'.

On the other hand, the industry group 'wood and wood products; furniture and fixtures' has shown a negative growth of 4.6 per cent followed by 3.8 per cent in 'machinery and equipment other than transport equipment'.

As per use-based classification, the sectoral growth rates in January 2008 over January 2007 are 3.5 per cent in basic goods, 2.1 per cent in capital goods and 7.0 per cent in intermediate goods. Consumer durables and consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 3.1 per cent and 10.1 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in consumer goods being 7.0 per cent.
