Delhi's new Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced that Maninder Singh Dhir, the member of his Aam Aadmi Party from Jangpura, would be the pro tem Speaker of the Delhi assembly.

The development came after the Bharatiya Janata Party spurned Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung's offer of the post to its veteran MLA and former minister Jagdish Mukhi. The Congress party, the AAP's reluctant ally, also refused to nominate anyone for the Speaker, leaving the burden on Kejriwal's shoulders.

The BJP leader said that after getting a letter from Jung about his appointment as pro-tem Speaker, he consulted his party and was apprised of the party decision.
