Wal-Mart Stores has been conducting a new price-comparison test in at least 1,200 US stores and squeezing packaged goods suppliers to close a pricing gap with German-discount grocery chain Aldi and other US rivals like Kroger, according to four sources familiar with the moves, Reuters reported.

The price test was conducted across 11 Midwest and Southeastern states such as Iowa, Illinois and Florida, which focused on the price competition in the grocery business that accounted for 56 per cent of the company's revenue, according to vendor sources who had direct knowledge of the matter but requested anonymity lest it disrupt business relations with Wal-Mart.

The retailer's tests were aimed at determining the right price point across a range of products that would attract more shoppers, and then adjusting prices as needed.
