Tata Motors on Wednesday announced a hike in the prices of its recently launched hatchback Tiago, ranging from Rs5,000 to Rs6,000, across all variants as the introductory pricing period ended this month.

Tata Motors had launched the new compact hatchback, Tiago, at a starting price of Rs3.20 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) for the Revotron 1.2L (petrol) variant and Rs3.94 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) for the Revotorq 1.05L (diesel) variant. The top-end diesel model was priced at Rs5.6 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Tata Motors said the price hike is marginal considering that the Tiago's introductory pricing, which usually is offered for around three months, has been extended to five months for customers.

The Tiago, which was originally named Zica, was renamed following the outbreak of the Zika virus.

The car comes on a completely new platform (new Revotron 1.2-L petrol engine and the first 1.05-L Revotorq diesel engine).

The car was a sell-off for Tata Motors and the company had to introduce a second shift at its Sanand-based manufacturing facility to ramp up production to reduce order backlog.

The company has over 30,000 bookings for the hatchback.

Earlier this month, Maruti Suzuki India had hiked prices of its various models by up to Rs20,000. Hyundai Motor India had also hiked prices by up to Rs20,000 across models from 16 August, to offset rising input costs and impact of rupee depreciation.

Ford India is the only carmaker to announce a slashing of prices. The US-based carmaker is offering discounts of up to Rs91,000 on select variants of its compact sedan Ford Aspire and Figo hatchback, to push sales.
