Siemens secures Rs1380 crore order from Adani news
02 May 2009

Siemens, leader in electrical and electronics engineering solutions, bagged on Thursday an order worth Rs1,380 crore from Adani Power Ltd.(APL), a unit of Adani Enterprises, for constructing a 1000 km power transmission system from Mundra in Gujarat to Mohindergarh in Haryana.

The joint order is awarded to Siemens Ltd, the Indian arm, which got a share of 720 crore, and its parent German company Siemens AG getting the remaining 660 crore.

Siemens AG managing board member Wolfgang Dehen and Adani Enterprises CEO (power transmission) R.K. Madan signed the agreement.

The transmission line will carry power from APL's Mudra power plant to the power deficit state of Haryana. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be commissioned in February, 2011 and the second phase in July, 2011.

The contract involves installation of a bipolar 500 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system of 2500 MW capacity including the turnkey execution of complete HVDC terminal stations at Mudra and Mohindergarh and associated electrode stations and a repeater station midway.

Major deliveries include 500 kV converter transformers, thyristor valves, filter equipments, AC / DC switchgears and other mechanical auxiliaries. In addition, Siemens will execute all related marine and inland transportation and civil works and commission the transmission system.

Madan said the dedicated HVDC power transmission line is environment friendly and more energy efficient compared to conventional AC power transmission lines.

Dr Armin Bruck, managing director of Siemens LtdDr Armin Bruck, managing director of Siemens Ltd, said, ''This is the third HVDC order that we have bagged in India and we are extremely proud to win this order from Adani Power for transmitting bulk power from surplus area to deficit area.''

Siemens Ltd. is the flagship listed company in India with 20 legal entities aggregating business volumes of about 11,800 crore. The company operates in the core business areas of industry, energy and healthcare with 19 production units and a nation-wide sales and service network.

Its quarterly results for March show sales of Rs2,368 crore, an 11 percent increase compared to last year. The net profit reported is Rs225 crore against a meager Rs.1.7 crore booked last year, although the figures are not strictly comparable due to substantial completion of certain large projects resulting in significant savings in estimated costs and consequential recognition of additional revenue and profits.

Adani power Ltd., a unit of Adani group which holds a diversified business portfolio covering energy, power, edible oil, real estate, agro products, special economic zones and logistics, has ambitious plans to generate around 10,000 MW of power by 2013.

Its Mudra thermal power plant will produce up to 4,620 MW of electricity in phases with the first 330 kW turbine going on stream in June. Another grass root power plant will be set up at Tiroda near Gondia in Maharashtra through its subsidiary, Adani Power Maharashtra Ltd. (APML) with a capacity of around 2,000 MW.

Other projects in the pipeline include the 2,000 MW Dahej power plant in Gujarat and the 1,320 MW plant in Kawai, Rajasthan.

Power supply agreements have already been signed with the states of Gujarat for 2,000 MW, Haryana for 1,420 MW and Maharashtra for 1,320 MW. Supply to the Gujarat grid will start from January next year, Madan said.

India has installed power generation capacity of about 148,000 MW. Nevertheless, power situation in the country remains grim due to higher growth in demand compared to the growth in power generation, with peak hour shortages reaching 14 per cent.
