Moser Baer to enter home entertainment marketnews
21 December 2006

Moser Baer India Ltd has entered the entertainment segment through content distribution for the home video market. The Mumbai-based has a presence across the country in all major metros and in smaller towns through a three-tiered distribution network.

Moser Baer India will release video content on DVD and Video CD formats using its proprietary and patented technology to enhance quality while cutting down on costs - a combination that could enable it to change the quality-price parity radically.

According to Yogesh Mathur, group CFO, "This initiative represent an excellent opportunity to leverage our optical media strengths in patented and proprietary technology, capacity and costs enabling us to offering high quality titles at very attractive price points between Rs28 and Rs34 for VCDs and DVDs. I believe that at these price points we will redefine the home video market in India."

At these prices, Moser Baer could end up wiping out rampant piracy as well.

The company has set up a new division to expand this business, which is negotiating to acquire copyrights or exclusive licenses for over 7,000 titles in major regional languages that account for a third of all movies produced in India.

The Indian home video market has grown at a sluggish pace despite India being the world''s largest producer and consumer of films.

Despite India having over 26 million DVD and VCD households growing at 25 per cent per annum, the Indian home video market accounts for a mere 7 per cent of the total film revenues of Rs7,900 crore. In the US, the home video market is almost the same revenue size as that of its theatre market.
