US defence contractor Lockheed Martin yesterday announced the acquisition of British information technology solutions firm Amor Group that is focused on the energy, transport and public services sectors.

The Maryland-based company did not reveal the financial terms of the transaction.

''The strategic acquisition of Amor Group is aligned with our strategy for Lockheed Martin International and expands our capabilities and expertise in international information technology, civil government services and the energy market,'' said Lockheed Martin CEO and president Marillyn Hewson.

Glasgow-based Amor Group has more than 500 employees across seven facilities in the UK and a presence in 15 additional countries.

The privately-held company's products help oil and gas operators protect production assets. Its unique systems ensure the effective operation of airports, while its information and communications technology supports important services for UK citizens.

''Amor Group is focused on delivering business critical outcomes for global oil and gas operators, international airports and UK government departments and agencies,'' said Amor Group CEO, John Innes.

For its transportation customers, Amor Group has developed a suite of solutions. Its Chroma Airport Suite, which is operational at more than 75 airports worldwide, manages more than 3 million aircraft movements and tracks 700 million passengers a year.

Lockheed Martin's IT division, which employs around 28,000 people and generates around $8 billion annually, provides services to the US military and intelligence agencies.

Apart from providing air traffic management technology within US-controlled airspace over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it also manages Britain's air traffic control systems, and recently was awarded a contract worth more than $100 million to design the network infrastructure for NATO's new Brussels headquarters.

Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company designs, develops and manufactures advanced technology systems, products, and services.

The company had net sales of $47.2 billion last year.
