Google acquires Germany’s iOS photo editing app Snapseed maker Nik Software

Internet giant Google Inc yesterday said that it has acquired Germany's Nik Software, maker of iOS photo editing application Snapseed, for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 1995, Hamburg-based Nik Software, develops desktop and mobile software solutions and technologies for the professional digital imaging and consumer photography markets.

Nik Software has become the recognised leader in digital photographic products and technologies, including its patented U Point technology. Its first ever mobile app, Snapseed, a competitor to Instagram, received iPad App of the Year in the App Store Rewind 2011 and the International TIPA Award 2012 for Best Mobile Photo App.

In 2011, the company earned the international TIPA Award for Best Photo Software for its Complete Collection of professional photography products, which includes Color Efex Pro, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro,Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, and Dfine.

Snapseed has more than 9 million users, while Instagram, which was recently acquired by Facebook, has more than 100 million.
