Hummer H3THummer, the popular sports utility range of vehicles from General Motors (GM) will officially introduce the H3T pickup at the Chicago Auto Show, which begins on 8 February 2008 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Hummer is entering the midsize pickup market with the H3T pickup, which GM plans to bring out on road in 2009.

It is based on the architecture of the popular H3, the smaller of the brand's two SUVs, and features a five-passenger crew cab and a separate 5-foot-long bed. In addition to its larger body frame, the H3T also stands apart from other midsize trucks with its signature Hummer off-road capabilities, with standard four wheel drive, 32-inch tyres and optional 33-inch tyres, and front and rear wheel-locking differentials for increased traction.

The base H3T will be powered by 3.7 litre five-cylinder engine with 242 horsepower while the higher version H3T Alpha will have a 5.7 litre V-8 with 300 horsepower than can tow up to 5,900 pounds.

The new pickup could help revive Hummer's sales, which sank 22 per cent last year as consumers fretted about the economy and high gas prices.

Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2008 at GM's Shreveport, La., assembly plant, with vehicles arriving at Hummer dealerships shortly thereafter. Hummer will sell the H3T in North America, Europe and the Middle East.
