In order to make a comeback in China, Facebook has developed a censorship tool that could hide posts about prohibited topics from Chinese FB users, The New York Times reported.

Instead of censoring posts itself, Facebook would rather let a third-party in China, such as a local partner company handle the task of keeping users in China from seeing content that ran afoul of the government's rules.

While Facebook could gain big in terms of both user numbers of revenue, the censorship tool could also be used to enact human rights abuse according to commentators. If China could track which local users were trying to protest or bad-mouth the government, they could face the consequences.

The newspaper added that might be the reason behind several Facebook staffers who worked on the product leaving the company.
