German luxury car maker BMW has unveiled its long awaited 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which is set to replace the company's classic naturally aspirated 3.0L six cylinder mill which it has been using in a series of its car models. The new 2.0L engine is also expected to finally be used in the BMW India portfolio models, over the coming years. The new engine goes by the  codename N20.

Though the company is being generally tightlipped as regards detailed specification of the engine for the moment, it is expected that the new engine would power the likes of BMW 1-Series, BMW X3, 3-Series, Z4 roadster and 5-Series models in the Indian market.

It may be pertinent here to point out that the N20 is the first four-cylinder petrol engine to use BMW's Twin-Power Turbo technology. The new engine comes with an all-aluminum crankcase along with a twin-scroll turbo charging system. The engine also incorporates the advanced version of the company's VALVETRONIC variable valve control system.

The new 2.0L power-train is capable of delivering a peak power 245-horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a top torque of 35.6 kg/m at a mere 1,250 rpm. The fuel consumption and emission levels are much reduced  in the new BMW engine as against the same of its existing 3.0L power-mill.
