Intel Corp, the world's biggest chip maker, is closing its Hudson plant in Massachusetts, leading to around 700 job losses.

California-based Intel yesterday said that it plans to cease production in Maynard, Massachusetts by the end of 2014.

The chipmaker said that the plant had outdated technology and was manufacturing older generation computer chips that are being phased out.

The Maynard plant manufactures mainly chip sets that are used for accessory products alongside Intel microprocessors and other chips used for applications other than computers.

An Intel spokesperson said that the company does not require this kind of manufacturing capacity for its long-term business needs.

The Hudson plant located in a 149-acre plot, originally belonged to Digital Equipment Corp (DEC), which became a part of Intel's manufacturing assets in 1998 when it acquired DEC's chip assets for $700 million.

Intel said it will lay off about 100 workers over the next three to four months, while the rest will remain until the plant is closed.
