US retailer Target will now allow returns for up to a year for the store's private and exclusive brands as it sought an advantage over rivals, both traditional and online.

The announcement yesterday would extend the previous 90-day return window significantly and is one of the most liberal polices among major retailers.

At Walmart, one can return most items bought within 90 days of purchase while online buyers had 90 days from the time they received the product.

In most cases items shipped from Amazon.com could be returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment while some products had different policies or requirements associated with them.

Best Buy allowed returns on almost everything within 15 days for a full refund or exchange.

Target's new return policy covered all of its 32 owned and exclusive brands, which included Circo children's items, Threshold household goods and Merona shirts.

The one year return period also extended to Target's baby, college or wedding gift registry, but those products needed to be returned unopened.

According to Target around 70,000 items like Archer Farms and Nate Berkus are also included in the year-long return policy.

The retailer earlier announced in February that all orders $25 or more on its website qualified for free shipping.
