Vintage cars can't ply on city roads: NGT
24 Feb 2015
In a blow to owners of vintage cars, the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which recently clamped a ban on vehicles older than 15 years from Delhi streets, said that even vintage cars are not exempt from the ban, The Times of India reported.
An NGT bench yesterday directed that no vintage car be permitted to ply on Delhi's roads, citing its earlier order.
The bench headed by NGT chairperson justice Swatanter Kumar made it clear that no authority would issue fitness certificates to the vintage cars without specific order of the tribunal.
The order came while a plea was being heard. Madan Mohan, director of 21 Gun Salute International Vintage Car Rally, had moved the tribunal seeking permission for vintage cars to take part in the rally.
"We make it clear that none of the vintage cars would be otherwise permitted on the roads of NCR nor any authority would issue fitness certificates to them without specific order of the tribunal." The plea would be taken up for further hearing, by the tribunal on 25 February.
According to vintage car owners, the order did not make sense as vintage cars were not driven regularly.
